Evaluation Of G321 Final Film

  1. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? 













Over the course of this project my skills in production have improved and developed widely. I have realised the detail and organisation it takes to plan a shoot and to get all the right equipment ready for a shoot. I have learnt how to use different filming techniques like the 180 degree rule (which we used in our film in a very short dialog scene), and match on action shots (like when our main character goes to pick up a stone). Being the actor in our film I also got the chance to learn how to keep continuity in shots etc. I also found that when using DSLR cameras the auto focus was not good when filming because it kept changing the focal point in the frame, this meant we had to use manual focus.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?


Overall I am pleased with the out come of my project. I feel my group and I have achieved a film that fits the genre of a coming of age drama and is also an interestingly shot film. I am very happy with our beach scene because it is well shot and exciting to watch. However, I am not happy with our bike scene because it is cheesy and not well edited; the sound effects and not very realistic and the editing is inconsistent.


Since the preliminary task I have found that it is almost impossible to get a successful shoot without a good plan, I also found this when filming the bike part of our film. In the preliminary task my group and I did a very rough storyboard which meant when filming we struggled to make a fluid sequence, where as when filming the beach part of our film we took lots of time planning the sequence so that we would be successful first time. This meant we did not have to go all the way back to Hailing Island.

The quality of my filming has improved massively since the preliminary task. In our preliminary task film our shots were very plain and boring. In our final film we wanted to achieve a different and innovative way of filming, like using focus pulls (in our case in our final film we focus pulled from a life ring to our main character, this was to imply he needed held and was troubled). However, I feel that in the preliminary task we used more interesting editing techniques to our final film, like match on action shots and tense shot reverse shots. What I did find during the preliminary task my group and I did not take enough takes of the same shot from different position so that it would be easier to edit. This was something that i remembered to do in the production of our final film. When editing the preliminary task my group and I used much more light hearted sound effects like cat noises, etc, while in our final film we used more realistic sound effects like the soft sound of waves/seagulls in the background to loud car screech during the bike crash scene.

Re-Shooting Bike Scene

We decided to try another attempt at creating another intense bike scene because we needed a way to kill off one of main characters friends and in our last attempt we made the cheesiest worst shot scene so far. We needed to do this because we needed a reason for our characters depression though out the rest of the film. At first we were going to have the death of hi parents but then thought it world be easy to tell in and opening the death of his friend. Also we could not find an adult to act as the parents for us.


We chose to shoot our bike scene in the backstreets/alleyways near to my house. We chose to do this because we wanted to keep the idea of our main character living in a lonely seaside town. This meant we did not want to make it look like our character was in an urban area.


He I have highlighted the main areas in which we used the alleyway for. For example the red circle is the point in which our main characters friend got hit by the car, and the yellow line highlights the rout that our characters followed before the crash


Here are tow of the shots from our new sequence. The shots are of the bike journey and Chester's friend after he was run over. To Get this blood effect we used red food colouring (for the colour), mixed with honey (to get a thicker effect).
