Evaluation Of G321 Final Film

Here are questions 1-3:

Question 6

  1. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Over the course of this project my skills in production have improved and developed widely. I have realised the detail and organisation it takes to plan a shoot and to get all the right equipment ready for a shoot. I have learnt how to use different filming techniques like the 180 degree rule (which we used in our film in a very short dialog scene), and match on action shots (like when our main character goes to pick up a stone). Being the actor in our film I also got the chance to learn how to keep continuity in shots etc. I also found that when using DSLR cameras the auto focus was not good when filming because it kept changing the focal point in the frame, this meant we had to use manual focus.

Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Overall I am pleased with the out come of my project. I feel my group and I have achieved a film that fits the genre of a coming of age drama and is also an interestingly shot film. I am very happy with our beach scene because it is well shot and exciting to watch. However, I am not happy with our bike scene because it is cheesy and not well edited; the sound effects and not very realistic and the editing is inconsistent.

Since the preliminary task I have found that it is almost impossible to get a successful shoot without a good plan, I also found this when filming the bike part of our film. In the preliminary task my group and I did a very rough storyboard which meant when filming we struggled to make a fluid sequence, where as when filming the beach part of our film we took lots of time planning the sequence so that we would be successful first time. This meant we did not have to go all the way back to Hailing Island.

The quality of my filming has improved massively since the preliminary task. In our preliminary task film our shots were very plain and boring. In our final film we wanted to achieve a different and innovative way of filming, like using focus pulls (in our case in our final film we focus pulled from a life ring to our main character, this was to imply he needed held and was troubled). However, I feel that in the preliminary task we used more interesting editing techniques to our final film, like match on action shots and tense shot reverse shots. What I did find during the preliminary task my group and I did not take enough takes of the same shot from different position so that it would be easier to edit. This was something that i remembered to do in the production of our final film. When editing the preliminary task my group and I used much more light hearted sound effects like cat noises, etc, while in our final film we used more realistic sound effects like the soft sound of waves/seagulls in the background to loud car screech during the bike crash scene.

Re-Shooting Bike Scene

We decided to try another attempt at creating another intense bike scene because we needed a way to kill off one of main characters friends and in our last attempt we made the cheesiest worst shot scene so far. We needed to do this because we needed a reason for our characters depression though out the rest of the film. At first we were going to have the death of hi parents but then thought it world be easy to tell in and opening the death of his friend. Also we could not find an adult to act as the parents for us.

We chose to shoot our bike scene in the backstreets/alleyways near to my house. We chose to do this because we wanted to keep the idea of our main character living in a lonely seaside town. This meant we did not want to make it look like our character was in an urban area.

He I have highlighted the main areas in which we used the alleyway for. For example the red circle is the point in which our main characters friend got hit by the car, and the yellow line highlights the rout that our characters followed before the crash

Here are tow of the shots from our new sequence. The shots are of the bike journey and Chester's friend after he was run over. To Get this blood effect we used red food colouring (for the colour), mixed with honey (to get a thicker effect).

Rudimental Music Video

I looked at the begging of 'Rudimental - waiting all night' music video consists of a group of friends biking through small streets and alleyways before one member of the group gets hit by a van.

I looked at this video because my group and I wanted to achieve an intense biking scene which inevitable ends with the death of our main characters best friend.

This music video uses techniques that we want to use to create a scene that is a contrast to our beach scene. We want to create a scene of happiness with a fast paced cutting to build tension for the bike crash. Like this video, we want to use lots of different shots and editing techniques to create a more exciting atmosphere.

Shoot Bike Scene

My group and I again have shot a scene that is separate to our beach scene. This consists of our main character and his friends biking through Richmond Park having a fun time before the death of his friend (he falls off his bike). This takes place in Richmond Park because we wanted to keep to the idea of making it seem like Our character lives in a lonely coastal town.
In this shoot we produced a variety very nice quality shots but found that again the editing did not connect and the acting was very poor/cheesy. This shoot way unsuccessful mainly because we did not plan how it would connect and worked so we spent most of our time deciding what we were going to do. We have decide to again re-shoot our film but this time in a more built up area and our characters friend would be hit by a car.

Shooting the end sequence of our film

Here we shot the scene in which our main character gets back from a fun game with his friends to receiving a phone call about the death of his parents.
This seemed to be very difficult because the acting in the shoot was very poor and cheesy. also the quality of the filming was at a very low level compared to our beach scene. The filming was cliché and did not give off the atmosphere we wanted.

Here is a shot from our this shoot, and although some of these shots were successful, as a group we felt we no longer wanted to use the scene so would have to think up a new one. we need an idea that will successfully show an unfortunate event which occurs in our min characters life.

Storyboard for new scene

Here my group and I realised that one of our scene really weekend our film. We have decided to get rid of the scene that consists of our main character moving into his grandparents. We have decided to do this because this scene is very slow and pointless and we fell it doesn't show a variety of filming skills that we want to show in the clip. The clip we want to replace it with is a quite fast paced and happy, witch is a jus to position to the depressing slow paced scene before. This scene will consist of the main character and his friends playing rugby. This takes place before the scene on the beach so will be a flash back.
We want this scene to add more sympathy to the character due to the fact he is leaving a life that he enjoys behind. Because of the timing of our film, we will have to make this scene short, for example a ten second montage of passes and tackles, etc.

Post Production

This week my group and I focused on editing our project. We have come to realise that one of the scenes in our film so far is pointless and unneeded (it is a long sequence of our main character moving into his grandparents house). We have decided to replace it with a new scene. We have not yet decided on the content of our new scene but, we want it to be happy and fast paced.
Another problem we are having is, we are finding it very hard to find the perfect song for our film. We want a sad song but at the same time we don't want it to be too depressing. We are also going to add wave sounds over the top to add a more calming, atmospheric effect to to scene.
I think that our first scene however, is very good and it seems to flow well throughout the edits. As a group we think we have achieved a scene that is appropriate to how our character is meant to be feeling. It has a sad depressing atmosphere which matches the feelings of our character. We did find that one part of this sequence needed tweaking. This was when the character is taking his shoes off - we found this took way to long. However, we have found the scene looses its fluidity when we cut out part of this action out.

Title Sequence Ideas

Here a member of our group, Charlie Harris, has mocked up some practice attempts for a variety of title sequence. We wanted to make a simple overlay title sequence that was very soft to fit the atmosphere of the opening scene.

We found that the best looking one for our film was the second one in the clip. This was because it was very simple and worked well with the wavy background. It is also very easy to read and and does not overwhelm the shot.

Finding Music For Our Film

We found a piece of acoustic music, by Tom Bailey, on youtube that we thought was good for the sad part of our film. We then went to ask if he would let us use his music, on Twitter.
We wanted to use this piece of music because we thought at this time that it gave of an sad atmospheric tone.
However, after he said yes we realised it was not quite right for the scene we made and decided to not use it.

My mock marks and giving feedback on other pupils mocks

My Mark: B
Asp: C
Q1: B
EAA: 13
Examples: 17
Terminology: 8
Overall marks: £8
My targets:
-Revis editing: ellipsis, Cutaway
-Spellings of key terms - e.g. stereotype
-Try for 3 examples in each category - remember music for sound

Giving feedback to another pupils work from Q1:
"As she is alone while everyone else is working, it shows her as an outsider."
- This point has not used any terminology so is meaningless.
- Does not show a representation of age so there is no point to this statement.

Q2: C
EAA: 13
Examples: 14
Terminology: 5
Overall marks: 32
Targets
- Practice spellings of key terminology
- Relate back to the questing at the end of each statement
- Create an argument
- Use your own research/casesudies

Giving feedback to another pupils work from Q2:
“The film used social networks and medias to sell the film, also with the help of Film 4 and Channel 4 airing it on TV increased The numbers of viewers a lot in a short amount of time”
- Needs to give evidence to support this statement
- Missing grammar, for example they used the word 'sell' when they should have used promote because social media and other medias do not sell the film.
- Needs to give an example of the social network.

The representaion of down syndrome in, Coming Down The Mountain

In the short two part series, Coming Down The Mountain, we see the relationship between a boy and his disabled brother with down syndrome. In this series we explore an interesting representation of these boys. Even thought one of the brothers has down syndrome we still see that the tow brothers are very similar due to the fact they are experiencing similar problems.

One way disability is represented in the extract that I saw is by the use of the camera. The first shot in the extract is a wide shot that is used to establish many things. For example, the difference in the brothers body language (the boy with down syndrome who is hunched other and the other boy who is standing strait). This already tells us that the boy with down syndrome has less authority then the brother without a disability. In this same shot the costume is used to show a difference in representation between the two characters. This use of the Mise-en-scene makes the boy with down syndrome seem carless in the way he dresses; the boys trousers are to short for his legs.

Another way down syndrome is representation in this extract is by the use of the Mise-en-scene. The boy with down syndrome uses facial expressions that to a non-disabled person would seen as very cheeky. In this case he tweaks his eyebrows at his brother when they are talking about a quite uncomfortable subject. This represents people with down syndrome to not have the boundaries that would be considered to far/uncomfortable. Another way the boy with down syndrome is represented to be very open is by the use of the Mise-en-scene. The technique of lighting is used to show the discomfort between the two brothers. In this case the brother with down syndrome is fully light again representing people with down syndrome to be very open, while the other brother (without disabilities) contrasts this because he is half lit showing he is hiding his fallings and is also felling awkward.

Finally, in this extract a long take is used to show the switch in power between the to brothers. This technique of editing  is very interesting because it is used in a way the shifts the authority in the relationship from being on the side of the brother without a disability to the side of the boy with down syndrome. This shows the disabled brother is more confident in this situation due to the fact he has no boundaries and a boy with down syndrome. Overall, I think this programme representation in both good and bad ways. showing they are both confident but at the same time have many difficulties.

Shoot/Production Of Our Film

On Friday the 23rd a group of three and I went off the Hayling Island (next to Portsmouth) to shoot our short opening for our film. The reason for going down to Portsmouth area was because we wanted to shoot down on the coast. This was because this is different to the usual idea of shooting in a built up area. Also the coast is often used in lots of indie films. We stayed at a member of the groups house, (Ben King) because they lived right next to the coast and this is the reason for us going to Hayling Island.

We started shooting early hours of the morning so that we had maximum shooting time before the tied came in to far. We realised straight away that we would need to shoot these shots over more then one day due to the fact we could not finish our shots before the tied came in. We found when filming on the beach there where many problems. For example, because it was so bright, we were unable to visualise on the camera wether the shots we in/out of focus. This was another reason why we needed to go back to the beach; we found when looking through the shots on a computer some of the needed shots where out of focus. Another problem was found in the lighting. Due to the sun being out, it meant the subject was saluted. However this in some cases worked in our favour because the shots where quit interesting.

We then had to shoot our shots for a different scene. This took place in the house in which we where staying. This shoot was much easier; we had everything we needed with us so we could easily review the footage while filming. We try a variety of different shots to achieve a more intriguing sequence. For example, in this image we where trying to get a nice POV from inside the trunk. In my opinion this shot came out very well because its makes the character look isolated and alone. In this scene was the only bit of dialog from this shoot. However, this bit of dialog was no longer then a few words because we thought dialog doe not look very good when we attempted it.

Group Roles In Our Film
