Creating Our Storyboard

Here I have drawn  up a storyboard using the ideas from the my group, for each shot of our indie film. We did take into account that when shooting we would most likely need to slightly tweak our ideas, so we made sure our shots could be changed without corrupting the film. We started by first drawing up out opening shots. We want to start with a slow montage of wave shots to establish the setting and to make a calm/slow atmosphere. this then slow cut through a variety of shots of our main character, ranging from long close ups takes of the characters face to wide shots of the character from a far.

It was hard to plan how we were going to order the film, due to the fact we had flash backs and three different scene in our short sequence to cording into our storyboard. We found there best way to represent changes in scene would to just cut to black. We have tried to add a match on action in our short to connect our flashback. We have done this by using a rugby ball that our character will be holding in two different scenes that will be framed in the same part of the shot.

Location

Our film is taking place on Haling Island (the home of our main characters grandparents). We chose to film here for two key reasons. these reasons are, there is a beach that we can use at the bottom of the Island and one of the members of our group has grandparents that actually live there.

We wanted to film on a beach due to the fact, lots of coming of age indie films takes place in a coastal town. for example, Submarine, The Way Way Back , etc.

Nick King - Editor

We had a work shop where a professional editor, Nick King, to help my group and I's broaden our ideas for our film. His twenty of experience gave use ideas for our opening scene, we came up with the idea to make the first shot of our main character as awkward as possible. In this case to use a 15 second shot of his face to re-enforce the idea that our main character seems suicided. 

Another tip he gave us was to not use narration in our film because it is hard to achieve good narration. Also we wanted to use his most useful tip for our film which was, less is more. This means to not clutter the editing sequences with lots of shots so the scene is easier to understand and not disorientating. Nick's term, less is more, will also help us for the sound effects/music. For example, not to mix lots of sounds and music together, creating a muffled noise. Finally, he told us, when shooting, to make sure that we shoot, reshoot, reshoot then reshoot again. This is because when we get to edit the footage it is easier to intercut.

-Film distribution is the process of marketing, promoting and distribution of films.

2. Who distributes films normally in the UK?
- There are two main distributes in the UK, All Industry Marketing for Cinema and Cinema marketing Agency.

3. Is this different from the vertical integration model followed by the major film studios?
- Distribution and exhibition operate most effectively when 'vertically integrated', where the three stages are seen as part of the same larger process.

4. What steps are involved in the steps of film distribution?
- Once the film has been made this is hen they can start to work on the film release strategy. then the distributors then secure the screening of the film within thee cinema.

5. What are the major decisions made during the marketing of a film?
- The marketing of a film release revolves around two key questions: 'When?' and 'How?'

6. What is P&A? And why is it important?
- P&A stands for Print and Advertising. This is important because they rise awareness of the film and promote them.

7. How is digital technology revolutionising the process of film distribution & marketing?
- Digital technology is seen to offer a more cost effective and logistics-light alternative to the tried and trusted.

The Codes and Convention of Coming of age Films

Researching the film Submarine

Here I have been researching the codes of conventions in coming of age indie films. The film that I researched was submarine. Some conventional things that I have found in a variety of indie films are, the main character is usually suffering from depression/an unfortunate event has taken place in there life (death of family member, usually parent).

Due to the fact I have to create a opening sequence, I watch the opening sequence of Submarine and I found that the main character seem sad/lonely staring into space. The Opening scene takes place in his room (boy looking out the window), and also next to the sea (staring at the horizon). It also takes place in a seaside town, that looks very boring and lifeless. The main character is framed in a way that makes him look vulnerable, depressed and quiet boring, this is done by a high angle shot, looking down at the character, and framing him centred of the screen which makes him look plain and boring. I also found that the main character wares dark colours (Blacks & Greys) to re-enforce the fact he is suffering from depression, and is in a dark place


This title is something that I want to take for inspiration for my film, because it is bold, and very simple. The Simple font fits/works with the atmosphere very well because its not cluttered and over the top.

Here we decided to go into more detail on the setting and location etc. We used a spider diagram to make it easier to think of ideas for our film. We used it to help us decide on the location and the date/duration of our filming. We have decided that we want to shoot on Hayling Island in the country, because it is near a beach which we think will suit our film due to the faked we want our character to seem shut off from the world.
