Target audience

This show that the people that we are aiming our film at (teenagers/young adults) like films with characters that are of the same age, so that they can relate to them more. For example the three most liked films are about teenagers filming themselves and struggling though life.

I found that The age range of for my film is from ages 15-24. This shows coming of age films are liked most by people who are coming of age.

The majority of people who were interested in our film were male. This may be because our hole cast in our opening scene is male. However, this will change later in the film when Chester gets a girlfriend, this may attract a wide female audience.

I have found that the target audience for my film is aimed towards 15-24 year old  students that are males. These people watch films very often so will have a strong taste in films. Their favourite genre of film is drama and comedy and like to follow a character through a journey and seeing them find them self.

Casting

Ryan Kelly
Keinan Rayat

Here we were looking for an appropriate cast for our film. At this point we were only looking for a main character but we might find that we need some more actors at a later point.
We wanted to get a person that looked normal, due to the fact we wanted our audience to be able relate to the character, and to re-enforce the fact what happened to him could happen to anyone.
Megan Hughes
Ben King
Charlie Harris
Tom Bradshaw
These people are people who we can easily get in contact with and are also friends. We thought this would be good because it means it would be less awkward to tell them what to do and how to do it. This means it would also be more enjoyable. However, none of these people have much experience in acting meaning the film may be a bit bring worthy.

We also decided that we wanted our main character to be male but we also wanted to have a woman actor in the film at some point latter in the film.

Desparate Housewives

Here Gabby slaps the doctor because he informs her she's pregnant. This represents her as a stereotypical emotional woman.

Lynette Scavo is represented as the earth mother, she is the motherly caring figure. The fact that she is breast feeding during a meeting shows she is always caring for others, showing she is selfless. However, the expression on her face show  its not natural for he so this is also a counter stereotype.

This is a counter stereotype because her Bree is a practical and not the man. She has to unload a gun for her husband. She is represented as the temptress, she is shown to be perfect, punctual and demestic.

Her Susan is shown to be the damsel in distress, without a man she is insecure and scared. For example here she shoots someone in the arm because she though they were an intruder.

Creating Our Storyboard

Here I have drawn  up a storyboard using the ideas from the my group, for each shot of our indie film. We did take into account that when shooting we would most likely need to slightly tweak our ideas, so we made sure our shots could be changed without corrupting the film. We started by first drawing up out opening shots. We want to start with a slow montage of wave shots to establish the setting and to make a calm/slow atmosphere. this then slow cut through a variety of shots of our main character, ranging from long close ups takes of the characters face to wide shots of the character from a far.

It was hard to plan how we were going to order the film, due to the fact we had flash backs and three different scene in our short sequence to cording into our storyboard. We found there best way to represent changes in scene would to just cut to black. We have tried to add a match on action in our short to connect our flashback. We have done this by using a rugby ball that our character will be holding in two different scenes that will be framed in the same part of the shot.

Location

Our film is taking place on Haling Island (the home of our main characters grandparents). We chose to film here for two key reasons. these reasons are, there is a beach that we can use at the bottom of the Island and one of the members of our group has grandparents that actually live there.
We wanted to film on a beach due to the fact, lots of coming of age indie films takes place in a coastal town. for example, Submarine, The Way Way Back , etc.

Nick King - Editor

We had a work shop where a professional editor, Nick King, to help my group and I's broaden our ideas for our film. His twenty of experience gave use ideas for our opening scene, we came up with the idea to make the first shot of our main character as awkward as possible. In this case to use a 15 second shot of his face to re-enforce the idea that our main character seems suicided.

Another tip he gave us was to not use narration in our film because it is hard to achieve good narration. Also we wanted to use his most useful tip for our film which was, less is more. This means to not clutter the editing sequences with lots of shots so the scene is easier to understand and not disorientating. Nick's term, less is more, will also help us for the sound effects/music. For example, not to mix lots of sounds and music together, creating a muffled noise. Finally, he told us, when shooting, to make sure that we shoot, reshoot, reshoot then reshoot again. This is because when we get to edit the footage it is easier to intercut.

1. What is film distribution?
-Film distribution is the process of marketing, promoting and distribution of films.

2. Who distributes films normally in the UK?
- There are two main distributes in the UK, All Industry Marketing for Cinema and Cinema marketing Agency.

3. Is this different from the vertical integration model followed by the major film studios?
- Distribution and exhibition operate most effectively when 'vertically integrated', where the three stages are seen as part of the same larger process.

4. What steps are involved in the steps of film distribution?
- Once the film has been made this is hen they can start to work on the film release strategy. then the distributors then secure the screening of the film within thee cinema.

5. What are the major decisions made during the marketing of a film?
- The marketing of a film release revolves around two key questions: 'When?' and 'How?'

6. What is P&A? And why is it important?
- P&A stands for Print and Advertising. This is important because they rise awareness of the film and promote them.

7. How is digital technology revolutionising the process of film distribution & marketing?
- Digital technology is seen to offer a more cost effective and logistics-light alternative to the tried and trusted.

The Codes and Convention of Coming of age Films

Researching the film Submarine

Here I have been researching the codes of conventions in coming of age indie films. The film that I researched was submarine. Some conventional things that I have found in a variety of indie films are, the main character is usually suffering from depression/an unfortunate event has taken place in there life (death of family member, usually parent).

Due to the fact I have to create a opening sequence, I watch the opening sequence of Submarine and I found that the main character seem sad/lonely staring into space. The Opening scene takes place in his room (boy looking out the window), and also next to the sea (staring at the horizon). It also takes place in a seaside town, that looks very boring and lifeless. The main character is framed in a way that makes him look vulnerable, depressed and quiet boring, this is done by a high angle shot, looking down at the character, and framing him centred of the screen which makes him look plain and boring. I also found that the main character wares dark colours (Blacks & Greys) to re-enforce the fact he is suffering from depression, and is in a dark place

This title is something that I want to take for inspiration for my film, because it is bold, and very simple. The Simple font fits/works with the atmosphere very well because its not cluttered and over the top.

Final Film Production

Here we decided to go into more detail on the setting and location etc. We used a spider diagram to make it easier to think of ideas for our film. We used it to help us decide on the location and the date/duration of our filming. We have decided that we want to shoot on Hayling Island in the country, because it is near a beach which we think will suit our film due to the faked we want our character to seem shut off from the world.

Steve Neale

Steve Neale states that 'genres are instances of repetition and difference' and 'genres are not systems, they are processes of systemisation'.He also say's that, definitions of genre are historically relative and are historically specific. He believed that there was a system of expectation and that by using own knowledge and applying conventions of the genre, the audience should be able to understand the narrative of the genre. He also declares that difference is accentual in genres because repetition is to boring for and audience.
For example, in soaps like Eastenders every couple of weeks new topic occur like, a characters death, a wedding, pregnancy etc.

Binary oppositions are opposites in a genre, for example, we see this in the crime genre between the crime solvers vs criminals, police vs truth, innocence vs guilt. In this genre, this is used to create conflict and give the audience a chance to take sides to feel more involved in the programme/film.
Todorov

The Narrative Theory:
Todorov in 1969 produced a theory which he believed to be able to be applied to any film. He believed that all films followed the same narrative pattern. They all went through stages called the equilibrium, disequilibrium, acknowledgement, solving and again equilibrium.
These are the five stages of the Narrative Theory:
A State of equilibrium (everything normal). A disruption of that order by an event. A recognition that the disorder has occurred. An attempt to repair the damage of disruption. A return or restoration of a new equilibrium.

Creating Our Final Film

Here a small group of three and I have been researching ideas for a film that we want to create. We realised that the best film to make for our level of production would be a indie drama genre.
This is because these films are low budget and set in the present day, we realised this when researching films made by Film4. I found that most of their films were deep dramas that were low budget and aimed at younger audience, for example films like Train Spotting and Submarine.
When researching ideas for our film we debated over many ideas for a film, ranging from a fast pass action adventure chase sequence to a slower drama about the difficulties of teen life.

So far we have decided to make an indie film about the struggle of a teenagers life through a very dark stage of his life, in this case his parents have sadly died. It starts with the character looking very depressed and suicidal, maybe on the edge of a  high place or next to the sea at night. Before the audience see if the teenager will chose to take his own life the camera cuts away from that scene which will hopefully draw the audience into the film, wanting to find out what will happen to the character. The next scene that the film cuts too is the teenager moving into his grandparent house a few days earlier. We have decided that this scene with cross-cut between him moving in, and a few days before that when he receives that his parents have tragically died in a freak accident of some kind.

We have also agreed that we want the main character to be a boy. It will be set in a seaside to emphasis how shut off from his old life he has become (where he lived in the city).

The representations of people in Love thy Neighbour

In the programme, Love thy Neighbour, there are many outrageous jokes towards both black and white people. For example, The programme makes it clear that it is ok to say cruel racist jokes towards black people when Eddy calls Bill a, "Nig Nog", this shows Eddy feels it is ok the call Bill very racist names. This shows that in and around 1972, when this programme was made, people felt it ok to here and say these things.

However, I also found that even though the programme is very racist to black people, white people are also represented poorly. They are shown to be stupid and senseless, we see this in season 1 episode 6 where, for a bet, where Eddy paints himself black to show Bill that he would be aloud in a bar. This make Eddy, the whit character, look extremely stupid because he believes he looks just like Bill, the black character.

G321 - Preliminary Task - Final Film

Here is our finished G321 preliminary task film. As a hole i think it came our as a well shot film that uses investing edits and shots. However, because this task was just to practice creating films, it because a bit of fun rather than a serious film.

Preliminary Task-Creating the Story Board

A small group of three and I had to make a short dialog scene about a fish. We decided to take a more violent/ humorous rout for our film. We started our film by first making a story board. We did this so that we were more organised when shooting the film, although at some points we didn't follow the storyboard accurately and to have a format to follow. When making the storyboard we it helped us to realise that some of the shot we wanted to create like arial shots where too hard, for we did not have the right equipment. Overall I think our storyboard was successful, this is because the our drawings were simple and easy to interoperate when shooting.
Once we had finished creating the storyboard we moved on to shooting our film. We decided to shoot our film in order of the storyboard to make it easier when editing. I like the first couple of shots in our film because of how we framed them. A problem that we had when shooting was, because we were shooting in school it was very hard to find a room that was not occupied so we ended up having to use our media room. This was bad because the lighting in tis room was very dark and there were also other people working in this room. This meant random voices could sometimes be heard in the background. Overall I enjoyed shooting the film and I think that we shot everything in an exciting way and were successful when shooting. However, we found when editing our film we had to reshoot a cupel of our shots to keep continuity.
Finally we had to edit our film. A problem that we had when editing was that we realised that some of the shots we needed we missing so we were delayed due to the fact we had to reshoot. We wanted to make sure that our film was not slow and boring so we edited between shots regularly to make scenes flow in a more existing way. There were a few continuity errors in our clip but we think they are not easy to spot, like shadows moving, etc. Overall, I am happy with how our film was edited and the sound effects that we put in gave the film more, humour and interesting to watch. I also like the change in editing speeds thought out the film; it made the scenes more exciting and gave it a level of suspense.

Creating a Horror film poster

This piece was created in paired work.
Here the the photograph we started with. we decided to use a mask for our monster because it produced thick shadows and also looked scarier then any attempts we made towards makeup. We used low key lighting to make the blood and the wrinkles more vivid. I also like how the the subject is taken slightly to the side of the photo; this made the monster seem intrigued with what it is looking at which in this case is the person looking at the poster.

After taking the photograph we used photoshop to edit our photos. In this case we brought out the reds in using the hue/satiation and the  colour balance. We also used the pen tool to select the light grey shirt and then darkened it. This was because we felt the shirt was to bright and took our eyes away rom the mask. We then lightened the areas around the subjects left eye. This is to emphasis the shadows and the blood on its face.

We then copied the face and placed it in a cantered position over the bottom layer. We then changed opacity of the new layer so that its was slightly see through, this effect made it look like the subject was shaking its head from side to side. Overall, I like the effect we have created and how to we have made the subject seem dark, mysterious, and in my opinion, scary.

Analysing Editing from The City Of God

 Graphic Match

A graphic match is where a shot from one matches the shot in the next. For example, there is a lens flair in the middle of two sinister looking characters which then cuts to a flash of a camera, held by a boy, in the same place on the screen. Here the use of a graphic match has been used to show the link between the main character in this story and a ruff favela. The scene cuts from  disturbing images of chickens being brutally sliced and boiled by barbaric slum dwellers to a young venerably boy with an old camera. this makes the boy seem caught up and related to these characters.

 Cross-cutting
A cross cut is used to relate two subjects from different scenes/shots to each other. For example, here there is a shot of parts of a chicken that has been sliced up, which then cuts suddenly to a chicken getting its throat sliced off. This cross-cut is used the show the violence that takes place in this favela and that everything, in some cases people are in danger. It also makes use fear for the boy that is connected to these cruel people. This edit also helps us to emphasis the harsh reality of living in the slums of Brazil.

This edit makes use feel very worried for the boy in this scene. This is because it shows the boy in a mid shot the quickly zooms out and as this happens a logo that resembles bars covers him making it seem the boy is trapped. The speed in which the camera zooms away from the boy shows use how easily the boys life can be threatened.

Casino Royal - Mise-en-scene

Here the Mise-en-scene is use to show the brutality of Bonds injuries. He is lit softly on the nose so that the shadows blur his eyes. The makeup shows that Bond has been in a fight or in a dangerous situation due to the fact he has black eyes. His expression shows that he is physically tired and weak from the dangers of his fight.

The Mise-en-scene in this shot is used to divide the two characters in the scene. The setting is in a very tropical, mountainous, beautiful area showing bond is very well looked after. The tree in the middle of the screen is use purposely to show the two characters have fallen out. The scene has been shot on bright sunny day to reinforce how amazing the area is. the props are used to show the brutality of his injures, he is sitting in a wheel chair with a blanket covering him. This makes him look weak and venerable.

The key part of the Mise-en-scene in this shot is the lighting. Although we can see lots of areas that give off light in this scene, the lighting is low key. This is to make scene seem dark and shows bond to be in a lot of danger. However, Bond is still lit very strongly making it seem he is still powerful in this situation. The setting makes the scene very thrilling because it makes Bond seem hopeless and abandoned due to the fact the shot takes place in an old, rustic, dark boat making is seem there is no chance for Bond.

Here a small group and I attempted to film and edit together a piece of dialogue from the film Finding Nemo. Overall I think it turned out terribly. We found that the footage we collected do not flow with each other, so when editing, the scene was jumpy and the sound levels were different in each shot. Also we decided to add music to the clip in an attempt to get rid of the background noise, but this just made it worse because the only music we had did not work with mood of the scene. In my next attempt to make a scene with dialogue I have learnt that it is better to keep it simple then to make the editing seem more dramatic and fast pace.
